Intro
The season opener for GD will not be remember for its pitching. Wolan, the team’s starting pitcher, struggled to locate the strike-zone, walking several batters over 4 innings.
Game Summary
The tone of the first inning was set when Wolan gave-up back-to-back walks to open the game. This was followed by a string of several well-placed hits, dropping the ball out of reach of GD’s defense. But GD’s defense kicked in and limited the Pezziers to 3 runs. The great defense continued into the second inning, limiting the Pezziers advance to second base, allowing no runs.
The Pezzier’s defense was solid, allowing no runs in the first and second innings. Their offense was lead by a pitcher who closely resembled Jerry Sienfield’s arch nemesis, "Newman" in the TV comedy "Sienfield".
The GD defense came apart in the third inning. A short offensive second inning for GD followed by long at bats for the "Pezziers" in the third tool its toll on the teams concentration and caused them to commit numerous fielding errors. Miss communication within the infield also took its toll, turning potential double plays or force-outs at first into no plays. Wolan’s pitching did not help either, which gave-up a grand slam over the left field wall. In all, 8 runs were surrender in the third inning alone.
Battle ridden, GD fought back in the bottom of the third, scoring a run off a Wolan single. The Pezziers responded with 3 runs in the fourth, which include a close play at home plate. GD responded with 3 runs of their own thanks to a 2 RBI double by Molloy and an RBI single by Palma.
Palma came on to relieve Wolan in the fifth. Unlike Wolan, he was able to locate the strike zone and limited the Pezziers to one run over 3 hits: the scoring run was by a base runner who was awarded second due to a throwing error to first.Despite the pitching success, the offense was shut-out in the fifth ending the game due to the mercy rule.
Despite the lows in GD’s pitching, they were able to draw 2 strikes and a fwl-out over 5 innings.
Missing Outs
The game was not without controversy. It is believed that the umpire failed to record an out in one or even two instances, forcing the already struggling GD defense to make 4-outs to end an inning. Wolan believed a force-out he made to first from a throw on the ground was not registered in the third inning. He adds he was confused as to why only on out was recorded later on in that inning. Christine recalls innings where 2 outs were made, but only one was recorded. (Specifics of her comments were not recorded.) Lack of book-keeping by GD makes this claim difficult to prove or appeal. More attention needs to be made to ensure such poor record keeping by the umpire does not hurt the team in the future.
